CIVIL LIST HONOURS FOR A SWANSEA FAMILY — JULY 1936

South Wales Daily Post
The South Wales Daily Post, reporting in July 1936, announced a distinguished recognition under the Civil List pensions for the year. Among the awards was a pension of £60 to Mrs. Morfydd Thomas, widow of Dr. D. Vaughan Thomas of Swansea, whose contributions to Welsh musical culture were long admired yet, as the paper observed, never fully acknowledged during his lifetime.

To modern readers, that £60 carries far greater weight — equivalent to roughly £5,504 today — a reminder of the significance of the award and the esteem belatedly accorded to Dr. Vaughan Thomas’s legacy.

Dr. Vaughan Thomas, whose work enriched Wales’s artistic life, died suddenly in Johannesburg while engaged on a music tour. The Post expressed a quiet satisfaction that, though honours eluded him in life, his widow now receives the recognition he so richly deserved.

Another award, also noted by the Post, was granted to The Rev. David Miall Edwards, D.D., formerly of Brecon College, who received a pension of £90, marking his distinguished service in Welsh religious and academic circles.
