A Box of Girl’s Clothes Found in a Garden — Owner a Domestic Servant

In July 1926, the South Wales Daily Post reported a mystery that unsettled the quiet respectability of Jones‑terrace, Swansea, when a box containing a young woman’s clothing was discovered in the garden of No. 19, the residence of Mrs. Davies. The neatly packed yet strangely abandoned box quickly became the subject of neighbourhood speculation as the events of the previous night were pieced together.

Residents recalled seeing a young woman wandering aimlessly along the terrace, pausing with visible uncertainty before several houses. She was later observed attempting to leave the box in the garden of No. 14, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Wright, before slipping away into the night with an air of distress that left witnesses uneasy.

Upon examination, the box was found to contain a quantity of female garments, believed to belong to Margaret Underwood, of Bridge‑street, Fishguard. Miss Underwood, known to have worked as a domestic servant in Swansea and at various hotels in Fishguard, appeared to have abandoned her belongings under circumstances that remain unexplained.
