Some names leave only the faintest trace in the surviving records, and Hugh Evans is one of those men for whom little personal information remains. What is known, however, is enough to honour his service and sacrifice.

Hugh Evans served as a Gunner with the Royal Artillery, attached to 452 Battery, part of the 67 (6th Battalion, The Welch Regiment) Searchlight Regiment. Searchlight units played a vital role in Britain’s air defence during the Second World War, illuminating enemy aircraft for anti‑aircraft guns and night‑fighter interception. Service in such regiments demanded long hours, technical skill, and constant readiness during periods of heavy Luftwaffe activity.

Hugh died on 9 April 1942, during the second full year of the war. His body was brought home to Swansea, where he was laid to rest at Bethlehem Congregational Chapel, Fforestfach, joining the quiet roll of local men who served and fell in the defence of Britain.
