Joseph Thomas Evans 

Private, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 11th Battalion
Died 3rd December 1914

An early casualty of the war, Evans served with the newly raised 11th Battalion during the first winter of the conflict.

Charles Henry Newbury

Private, Welsh Regiment, 6th (Glamorgan) Battalion, Territorial Force Died 23rd December 1914 A Territorial soldier whose death came just before Christmas 1914, marking one of Swansea’s earliest wartime losses.

David Thomas

Private, Welsh Regiment, Depot Died 27th March 1915 Serving at the regimental depot, Thomas died during the first spring of the war, before seeing overseas service.

James Keeffe

Private, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, 1st Battalion Died 7th November 1915 A member of a regular battalion heavily engaged on the Western Front, Keeffe’s death came during a hard year of fighting.

Josiah Walters

Private, Royal Army Medical Corps, 2nd/4th London Field Ambulance Died 19th November 1915 Walters served with a London Field Ambulance unit, supporting medical operations close to the front.

William David Griffiths

Seaman, Royal Naval Reserve, M.F.A. Polmont Died 25th January 1916 A Swansea naval reservist serving aboard the auxiliary vessel Polmont, Griffiths died during the winter of 1916.

Thomas William George

Sapper, Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, 4th Siege Company Died 15th November 1916 George served with a heavy engineering company responsible for siege works during the later stages of the Somme campaign.

Albert James

Private, Army Ordnance Corps Died 20th November 1916 A soldier of the vital ordnance service, James died while supporting the supply and maintenance backbone of the British Army.

Tudor Emlyn Jones

Rifleman, Rifle Brigade, 11th Battalion Died 30th March 1917 Jones served with the Rifle Brigade during the build‑up to the Arras offensive, his death marking Swansea’s continuing losses.

William Alfred Mallam

Able Seaman, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Hood Battalion, Royal Naval Division Died 8th April 1917 Mallam fought as part of the famed Hood Battalion, dying shortly before the Battle of Arras.

Arthur Oswald Hopkins

Private, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion

Died 16th April 1917 A soldier of a regular battalion with long service on the Western Front, Hopkins died during the fierce fighting of spring 1917.

Zephaniah James

Private, South Wales Borderers, 3rd Battalion Died 2nd July 1917 Serving with the reserve battalion, James died at a camp in Liverpool; his body was returned home to Swansea.

Richard Lewis Davies

Private, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own)

Died 16th May 1918

Davies died in Shropshire while serving with the regiment; he was brought home for burial at Cwmgelli Cemetery.

David Walters

Driver, Royal Field Artillery, “A” Battery, 251st Brigade Died 8th June 1918 A Swansea artilleryman responsible for horse teams and gun transport, Walters died during the final summer of the war.

Thomas Henry Morris

Private, Army Service Corps, No. 2 Remount Depot

Died 15th September 1918

Morris served in the Remount Service, caring for army horses; he died at Western General Hospital, Neath.

Thomas Llewellyn Davies

Major, Royal Air Force (attached Royal Field Artillery), Military Cross Died 16th September 1918 A decorated officer of the newly formed RAF, Davies died at Winchester and was brought home to Swansea.

Rees Connick

Seaman, Royal Navy, H.M.S. Vivid Died 20th September 1918 Connick served at the Plymouth naval base Vivid, dying during the final months of the war.

Alfred Charles Sandy

Fireman, Mercantile Marine, H.M.S. Arlanza Died 1st October 1918 A Swansea fireman serving aboard the armed merchant cruiser Arlanza, Sandy died in Liverpool from disease.

David Joseph Pelzer

Trimmer, Royal Naval Reserve, H.M.S. Victory Died 15th October 1918 Pelzer served in the stokehold of Victory, dying from disease shortly before the Armistice.

John Watkin John 

Private, Welsh Regiment, “D” Company, 9th Battalion Died 29th October 1918 Discharged unfit in 1916, John died in Swansea in the final days of the war.

William Mark Draisey

Gunner, Royal Field Artillery, 85th Battery, 11th Brigade Died 5th November 1918 Draisey died of wounds at Chatham just six days before the Armistice.

Robert Henry Harvey

Private, Royal Army Medical Corps Died 11th November 1918 (Armistice Day) Harvey died on the very day the guns fell silent, marking one of Swansea’s final wartime losses.
