Ivor Kenneth Colquhoun

 I. K. Colquhoun was the first of the war casualties to have been buried at Bethel Welsh Congregational Chapel.

Ivor Kenneth Colquhoun was born in 1894, in Mumbles.  He was the son of John and Elizabeth Colquhoun nee. Warren, they were married in 1888.












At the time of the 1891 Census, the couple resided at 42 Plasturtion Gardens, St. Johns, Cardiff.

Scotland-born John, 32, was employed as an Iron and Mineral Merchant, while Kent-born Elizabeth M., 30, was unemployed.  They had two children James A., 2, and 5-month-old Margaret I. Also present are three servants, Emma A. Williams, 21; Margaret Parsley, 18 and Charlotte L. Edmunds, 13.

A decade later, in 1901, the family moved to Swansea where they resided at 1 Woodbury Villas, Uplands.

John, 42, is employed as a Colliery Agent.  Elizabeth M., 40.  They are parents to four children, James A., 12; Margaret I., 10; Ivor R., 7 and Alexander I., 5.  Also present is one servant, Florence L. Shuttleworth, 18.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Ivor, 17, is residing at 43a High Street, Newport, Monmouthshire, Where he is employed as an Assistant Drapery.

At the time of the outbreak of the First World War, Kenneth had enlisted as a Private with the Manchester Regiment and was training at Southport, when he was granted a commission as 2nd Lieutenant of the 14th (Service) Battalion, Welsh Regiment (Swansea Battalion).  His commissions are reported in The Cambrian Daily Leader, 31st March 1915.

The 14th (Service) Battalion, Welsh Regiment (Swansea Battalion) was raised in October 1914, in Swansea by the Mayor and Corporation and the Swansea Football and Cricket Club.

Sadly, by September 1915, Kenneth had died at his family home, Woodbury Villas, Uplands.

The military funeral service was conducted at Rhyddings Congregational Church, with a burial at Bethel.
