Situated in the Jewish section of Oystermouth Cemetery is a memorial to 9 Jewish soldiers that were killed during the First World War.

The memorial previous locations were at the Jewish Synagogue situated at Ffynone Road and prior to that the Ffynone Synagogue situated at Goat Street.  Goat Street used to run from Caer Street to College Street today but made way for the Princess Way created during the late 1950s.

Joseph CLOMPUS

Lance Corporal Joseph Clompus enlisted at Finsbury, Middlesex and initially served with the London Regiment before he served with the Rifle Brigade, 2nd Battalion. Killed in Action on 31st July 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Joseph was the son of Moses and Rose Clompus who was born 1886, Russia.  When he enlisted into the army, Joseph states that his place of birth was Swansea.

1901 Census

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family was residing at 19 Neath Road.  Moses, 54, was employed as a Pedlar Hawk.  He was Russia born, along with wife, Rose, 44 and children Leah, 16; Josph, 15; Harris, 14; Rachael, 12 and Sophia, 10.  The rest of the children were born in Swansea, Sidney, 7; Samuel, 5 and Josephine, 4.  The census records their surname as Columbus.

1911 Census

A decade late the family having moved from Swansea were residing at 33 Kings Road, Canton, Cardiff.  Moses, 65 is unable to Follow Any Occupation.  Rose is 54.  Daughter, Leah, 27 is married and her children Rita Zausmer, 6; Lydia Zausmer, 2 and 4-month-old Harold Zausmer are present.  Joseph, 25 is employed as a Picture Frame Maker.  Harry, 24 is employed as Clerk in Office. Rashel, 17; Sidney, 17 is also a Picture Frame Maker. Sam, 16 is employed as a Shop Assistant and Josephine, 16.  The census records the family surname as Clompers.

Benjamin COLLINS

Private Benjamin Collins served with the Grenadier Guards, 1st Battalion. Killed in Action on 12th October 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Benjamin place of birth was Borough, London, SE. and his place of enlistment was Stratford, Essex.









Morris JACKSON

Private Morris Jackson served with the Welsh Regiment, 6th Battalion.  Died of Wounds on 2nd April 1916 and is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France.

1911 Census

Morris was Russian born along with his parents and siblings.  At the time of the 1911 Census, the family were residing at 3 Th Walk, Roath, Cardiff.  Israel Jackson, 53, was an employer in his Picture Dealer business. Ada, wife, 52.  Children Louis, 24; Benjamin, 21; Morris, 18 and Robert, 16 all Assisted in the Business, whilst Jack, 11, was a Scholar.  The family employed a Servant, Kate Davies, 23.

Second Lieutenant Joel Jacobs served with the Yorkshire Hussars (Alexandra, Princess of Wales’ Own), 5th Battalion. Killed in Action on 20th July 1916, aged 21.  Buried at La Laiterie Military Cemetery, Belgium.  Son of Michael and Pearl Jacobs of “Ffynonfa”, Park Drive, Swansea.










1901 Census

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family were residing at 53 Walter Road.  Michael, 31, has his own business as a Home Furnisher.  Wife, Pearlie, 27.  Joel, 6, is the only child currently.  Also present are brother, Graham, 26, who also has his own business as a Home Furnisher and brother-in-law, Albert Victor Goodman, 25 who is Assisting in the Business.  Also is a nephew, Henry Barnett, 7.  A Servant, Alice Vigers, 24 is present at the address.

1911 Census

A decade later, at the time of the 1911 Census, the family are still residing at 53 Walter Road.  Michael, 41.  His occupation is listed as Furniture Dealer.   Wife, Selina Pearl, 38.  Children Joel, 15.  He is still at School along with his brother, Louis George, 8.  Also present at the property on the Census Night is nephew Jacob Joel Manchester, 17.  His occupation is listed as Furniture Dealer.  Also, two Servants, Ida Poole, 19 and Alice Vaughan, 24.

Hyman LEITZ

Private Hyman Leitz served with the Royal Fusiliers, 11th Battalion.  Killed in Action on 10th August 1917, aged 23.  Commemorated at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.  Son of Herman and Golda Leitz, of 28 Windsor Road, Neath.












1911 Census

At the time of the 1911 Census, the family were residing at 17 Eva Street, Neath.  Herman Leitz, 44, has his own business as a Clothes Dealer.  His place of birth is listed as Vilnow, Russia.  Also born here are wife, Gilda, 42, who is also a Clothes Dealer.  Hyman, 15, also a Clothes Dealer. Jacob, 13; Abrham, 13.  Phoebe, 8; Joseph, 4; Edith, 3; Rachael, 3 and Ruben, 1 are listed to having been born at Neath.  Also present at the address Vilnow, Russa born David Leitz, 25, Carpenter and Edith, 25.

Solomon NEWMAN

Rifleman Soloman Neuman served with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, 1/7th Battalion.  Killed in Action on 17th April 1918, aged 19.  Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.  Son of Harris and Rebecca Neuman, of 26 Prince of Wales Road, London.

At the time of Solomon’s enlistment, his place of birth is recorded as Bristol.  He had been resident at Swansea, and he enlisted at Cockspur Street, Middlesex.

Reuben ORMAN

Serjeant Reuben Orman served with the South Wales Borderers, 1st Battalion.  Killed in Action on 31st October 1914, aged 26.  Commemorated at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.  Son of Mr. S. Orman, of 143 Mill Street, Liverpool.  Brother of 13052 Private H. Orman.










1901 Census

At the time of the 1901 Census, the family were residing at Cambrian House, Risca, Monmouthshire.  Parents are both Russian born, Simon, 43.  His occupation is listed as Drapery Traveller and Shopkeeper.  Wife, Ester, 40, her occupation is listed as Drapery.  All the children having been born locally in Monmouthshire.  Hyman, 18, Hawker; Bessie, 16; Amy, 15, Schoolteacher; Joseph, 14; Reuben, 12; Gerty A., 11; Jepha C., 9; Selina C., 7 and Sarah R., 5.  Also present at the address is Servant, Mary A. Sulivan, 15.

Sadly, there record as to where Reuben was at the time of the 1911 Census. 

Brother Hyman, enlisted on the 16th April 1915, at St. Paul’s Churchyard, London to serve with the Royal Field Artillery. The following days Hyman deserted from the army.

Joseph POMERANTZ

Private Joseph Pomerantz served with the Leicestershire Regiment, 2nd Battalion.  Killed in Action on 25th September 1915, aged 33 years.  Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.  Husband of Eugenie Pomerantz of 45 Dyfatty Street.





1901 Census

At the time of the 1901 Census, London born Joseph Pomerantz was residing at his brother, Harris address, 23 Baundo Street, Llangnwyd.  Harris, 37, who was Polish.  Harris owned his own shop.  Wife Alice, 38 is also Polish born.  They had adopted a child, Annie, 3.  Also present at the property is brother, Reuben, 22, also Polish works in Shop.  Joseph, 20 is a Peddler Hawker. Their father, Louis, 67, also Polish works in the shop.  Also, resident at the address is boarder, Isaac, 28, he is also a Peddler, Hawker.

1911 Census

By the time of the 1911 Census, Joseph has moved to Swansea.  Now 29, he is employed by Glazier.  He is married to Austrian born, Geniz.  They have four children Israel, 9; Sarah, 7; Leah, 5 and 2-year-old Clara.

Private Joseph Jacob Seline served with the Royal Fusiliers, 26th Battalion.  Killed in Action between 4th and 10th October 1916, aged 19.  Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.  Son of David and Rachel Seline, of 18 Uplands Cresent, Swansea.

1901 Census

At the time of the 1901 Census, Joseph, 4, was residing at his parent’s home, 5 Oakland Terrace.  All were Swansea born, David Moses, 33, had his own Solicitors business.  Wife Ray, 33.  Children Nathan, 9; Nita, 8; Mervyn, 6 and Joseph, 4.  Also present at the address is a Servant, Elizabeth Atkins, 24.

1911 Census

By the time of the 1911 Census, the family have moved to 1 Sketty Road.  David, 43, his occupation still listed as a Solicitor. Wife Ray, 43.  Children Nibe, 18; Mervyn, 16, Apprentice to Motor Engineer and Joseph, 16.  Also present is a niece, Ethel Borgen, 15.
