Richard Phelps Gough (1869 – 1930).

Richard Phelps Gough was a Master Mariner, Cape Horner and
was later a Swansea Sea Pilot, more about him.
However, would like to find if there are any ancestors from Richard
family.
So, let’s start at the beginning
William Gough and Mary Ann Thomas, Richard’s parents were
married at St. James church, Swansea 16th May 1859. They were both Full Age, and they were both
living at Rutland Street. William’s
occupation at the time of the wedding was Pattern Maker.

By the time of the 1861 Census, were residing in
Swansea. Morriston born William, 25, was
employed as Millwright. Swansea born
Mary Ann, 20, was mother to 4-month-old David John.

By the time of the 1871 Census, the family now 5 children
were living at 9 St. Davids Place, Swansea William, 34, is employed as a Manager of
Boilers and was cooking at the Goal. Mary,
30. Children present at David J., 10;
George, 7; William, 4; Richard P., 2 and 1-month year old Mary M. this is the first census for Richard.

1881 Census, the family have moved to 33 Princess Street. William, 44, is employed as Prison Officer Mechanic. Mary, 40. Children present are George, 17, is employed as a Pupil Teacher; Richard P., 12; Mary, 4, both go to School; Horace N., 3 and William H., 1.

At the time of William Gough death November 1887, the family are living at Delhi Street and is employed at Swansea Prison. William is buried at Danygraig Cemetery. It wouldn’t be until 1906, that his Will is given Probate. The announcement of William’s death is published in South Wales Daily News, 12th November 1887.

1891 Census, Mary Ann is living at 30 Trafalgar Place, Brynmill. Present at the property is George, 27, Schoolmaster; Mary An., 14, Scholar and H. R., 4, Scholar.

The year earlier, Richard, was awarded the Master and Mates
Certificate, after fulfilling the duties of Second Mate.

The start of the new century, the 1901 Census, Mary, 60, is still living at 30 Trafalgar Place, Brynmill. Mary is Living on Own Means. Present at the property is Richard, 35, Master Mariner; Minnie, 24, Postal Clerk; Horace, 22 and Francis George, 21 whom are both Mariner Engineers.

1911 Census, Mary Ann, 40 is a boarder at her son in law Albert Edward Simpson home, 19 Ernald Place, Uplands. Mary Ann dies 1917 and she is buried alongside William at Danygraig Cemetery.

At the time same time, 1911, Richard is living at 7 Beachwood Road, Uplands. Richard, 42, is listed as a Sea Pilot. Present is his wife, Winifred Harriott, 28 and 1-year old Wm. Hubert James. Therese Sunderen, the 17-year-old Servant is employed by Richard. Richard married Winifred Harriott Bright during 1908.

The last census that is publicly available the 1921, the family are still living at 7 Beachwood Road. Richard, 51, Sea Pilot is employed by the Swansea Harbour Trust. Winifred Harriott, 38 and 4 children, William Hubert, 11; Gwyneth Mary, 9; Richard Glyn, 7 all of whom are at School and John Ivor, 1. Also present is Rose Wadham, 29 from London.

Richard died October 1930 at Bonville Terrace, Swansea
William J., at the time of the 1939 Register, is living at
102 Hazelwick Road, Cuckfield, Sussex, with his wife Christine Elizabeth.
William’s occupation is Aircraft Inspector.

Gwyneth Mary was living at 5 Christine Street during 1936 –
1937. At the time of her marriage at Truro, Cornwall during April 1938, she
married Albert E. Hodgkinson.
It is at Turo, that they were present at the time of the
1939 Register. Albert is employed as a General Manager & Secretary
Co-Operative Society Ltd.

Richard Glyn was living at 26 King Edward Road during 1936 – 1937. During July 1939, Richard married Margaret E. Roberts in Swansea. However, at the time of the 1939 Register, Richard is living at 84 Benedictine Road, Coventry where he is employed as an Electrician on Aircraft.

So, what about the sibling during the years.
The eldest brother, David John, dies 1877 aged 16.
George the next eldest brother, married Eva Phillips, August
1900 at Llangennith.
By the time of the 1901 Census, George and Eva were living
at 22 Windsor Street. George, 27 was a
Schoolmaster.

The 1911 Census, George and Eva had moved to Rydal Mount, 3 Bernard Street. Currently the couple hadn’t any children.
William the next oldest brother there doesn’t seem to be any
other information in any other census records.
Mary Margretta the younger sister from Richard died 1874, aged 4.
The younger sister, Mary Ann, married during 1907, Alfred
Edwin Simpson. Alfred came from
Newmarket, Cambridge. By the 1911
Census, they were living at 19 Ernard Place, Alfred, 32, is employed as an
Assistant Accountant Gas Works. They have a son Alfred William, aged 3.
Also present at the property is Mary Ann and Horace N., younger
brother of Richard. Hoarce died April
1917.
