A year after the Armistice, in November 1919, W. R. Hopkins, was the fourth burial after the Armistice at Bethel Welsh Congregational Chapelyard.

Lance Corporal W. R. Hopkins, served with the South Wales Borderers, 3rd Battalion, and died 26th November 1919.

Walter Rees Hopkins was the son of John and Maria Hopkins nee. Rees, they were married in 1871.

The 1901 Census records the family as residing at 36 Princess Street, Swansea. John, 49 is employed as Sailmaker; Maria, 49.  The children are Richard, 20 employed as General Labourer Rear Driver; Thomas, 18, employed as Labourer in Timber Yard; Jenney, 17, employed as a General Servant – Domestic; Charles, 14, employed as a Grocers Errand Boy; Trevor, 9; Henry, 6; Walter, 4 and Sidney, 2.

The family is still living at 36 Princess Street by the time of the 1911 Census.  John, 56, is an Assistant Undertaker; Maria, 56. The older children have since moved away from the family home, and the oldest child that is still residing at home is Trevor, 19, who is a Porter; Harry, 16, who is an Errand Boy; Walter, 13, who is an Errand Boy after School; Sidney, 11, who attends School.  Also present at the address is a Lodger, widowed, Edward Phillips, 51, Insurance Agent.

Walter’s name was added to the Electoral Register, in 1919.

Bermondsey Military Hospital,
Ladywell Road, Lewisham

Sadly, Walter was a patient of Bermondsey Military Hospital, Ladywell Road, Lewisham, dying there on 26th November 1919. The Bermondsey Military Hospital had 796 beds, where 103 were for tuberculosis patients.  Following his death, Walter was buried at Bethel Welsh Congregational Chapelyard.
