Private Harold Wald served with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, 5th Battalion. Killed in Action, 16th February 1945, aged 20 years. Buried at Milsbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands.  Son of Samuel and Gertie Wald, of Leeds.

Born 1924 at Swansea.  There is no reference to Harold on the 1939 Register.

Private Sydney Wald served with the South Wales Borderers, 1st Brecknockshire Battalion.  Died on 16th June 1940, aged 24 years.  Buried at Swansea Hebrew Congregational Cemetery.  Son of Samuel and Gertie Wald, of Leeds.












1911 Census, the Russian born Samuel Wald who is recorded as Vald is residing at his mother Annie property, 150 Brown Yard, Leeds.

Annie, 42, Tailoress Coats.  She has been widowed.  Her children are sons, Sam, 20, Tailor and Joseph, 5, school. Daughters Ceila, 16, Tailoress Coats; Rose, 14, Tailoress and Minnie, 11, school.

Meanwhile Russian born Girty Wineberg is residing at her parent’s property, 5 Elmwood Terrace Off Camp Road, Leeds.

1911 Census

Louis, 45, Trouser Maker and his wife, Rachell, 42.  Their children are Morris, 22, Tranether Draper; Girty, 18, Tailoress. The remaining children were born in Leeds.  Archie, 16, Machinery Tailor; Harris, 15, Machinery Tailor; Sam, 12, school; Annie, 11, school; Sally, 9; Minnie, 7 and Gintry, 5.

Gertrude Wineberg and Samuel Wald married 1915 at Leeds.

By the time of the 1921 Census, the couple are residing at 39 Brunswick Street.

Sam, 30, is employed by Sipmar Leyland as a Tailor.  His place of birth isn’t recorded.  Gerty, 27.  Her place of birth is recorded as Lithuania. Sydney, 4.  His place of birth is recorded as Leeds.  Sam’s brother, Jack, 16 is also present on the evening of the census.  He is also employed by Sipmar Leyland as a Tailor.

1939 Register

The 1939 Register. The couple are still resident at 39.  Samuel’s occupation is a Master Tailor. Sydney is a Hairdresser (Gents) whilst brother Mervyn is a student.
