Samuel George Evans

 

Sergeant S. G. Evans was the second military burial in 1915 at Bethel Welsh Congregational Chapel.

Samuel George Evans was born in 1891 to Thomas Evans and Alice Evans nee. Hall.

Their marriage occurred in 1880, at the Parish Church, St. Twynnells, Pembrokeshire. By the time of the 1881 Census, the couple Thomas, 22, and Alice, 21, were still living with William and Ann Hall, Alice’s parents at Carew Farm, St. Twinelll, Pembrokeshire.  Thomas’ occupation is recorded as Stone Mason.

A decade later, in 1891, the couple resident at 96 Llangyfelach Street. Thomas, 30, is a Copperman Labourer. Four children have been at the time of the census, John H., 9; Margaret A., 7; Mary A., 5 and 1-month-old Samuel G.

By the time of the 1901 Census, the family was resident at 11 Llangyfelach Street.  Thomas, 40, is a Mason Labourer.  There are five children, John, 19; Mary Ann, 14; Samuel, 10; Alex, 7 and William, 4.

Samuel at the time of the 1911 Census, who is 20, is employed as a Labourer.  The family have moved to 95 Oak Terrace, Llangyfelach Street.  Thomas, 50, is a General Labourer. Alice Jane, 53. Children John, 29 is employed Fuel Worker; Margaret Ann, 27, who is married; Mary Ann, 24, who is also married; Alexander, 17 who is a Labourer; William T., 14 and Esther A. Jenkins, 5, granddaughter.

1911 Census

Two years later, in 1913, Samuel married Florence E. Andrew and the following year, they had a daughter, Florence E, who died in 1915.  A  second child, Samuel G, was born 1915.

Samuel enlisted and joined the 6th (Glamorgan) Battalion, Welsh Regiment, in 1912.  Samuel saw action on the Western Front during the First World War.

February Samuel was injured at the Front, with injuries to his spine.  In October 1915, Samuel died at Cambridge Hospital.
