Benjamin Smitham

 Benjamin Smitham, died on the 25th of March 1916, at Bangor Military Hospital. 

Born in 1884, Benjamin, was the son of John Smitham and Kezia Hughes, who were married in 1869.

At the time of the 1891 Census, the Smitham family were residing at 18 Bethesda Place.

1891 Census

John, 42, was employed as a Barge Man.  Kezia was 38 years old.  Their children were

Hannah, 17, was employed at the Fuse Works; Lily, 13; John, 11; Jenny, 9; Benjamin, 6; Florence, 3 and 6-month-old Nellie.

The family were still living at 18 Bethesda Place, at the time of the 1901 Census.

John, 52, was employed as a General Labourer.  Kezia was 48 years old.  Their children present at the property were

William, 21, was employed as a General Labourer; Jenny, 18; Benjamin, 16; Florrie, 13; Nellie, 10 and 8-year-old Kattie.

1902 Benjamin married Elizabeth Ann Lodwig at St. John-juxta-Swansea.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Benjamin and Elizabeth who were both 27 years old were living at 25A Tontine Street.

Benjamin was employed as Fuel Worker. 

The couple’s children were Albert Edward, 6; Lilian, 4 and 1-year old Mary Winifred.

During the First World War, Benjamin enlisted and served with Welsh Regiment.  Following his death, Benjamin was buried at Danygraig Cemetery.
