Charles Henry Newbury is one of the First World War burials at Cwmgelli Cemetery.

The headstone doesn’t record his age, however, using the available records Charles at the time of his death was just 13 years old.

Charles was born in 1902 and was the son of Charles Henry Newbury and Rose Maria Dacey.  They were married in 1878 at St. John-juxta-Swansea.

The only census, that Charles recorded was in 1911.

The Newbury family were living at 12 Iorwerth Street, Manselton, Swansea.

Charles Henry, 34, was employed as a Timekeeper, whilst Rose was 34 years old. Their children were.

Doris Rose, 13; Selian Maud, 11; Charles Henry, 9; Jack, 7, all of whom attended school.  Eva Mary was only 1 year old.

Also present at the address, was Charles’ brother-in-law, Thomas Davis Dacey, 44, employed as Baker.  Thomas was widowed.  Also were his sons, Albert, 19, employed as a Labourer, and Thomas, 14, who was a Chemical Plumber Assistant.

At the outbreak of the First World War, Charles was ranked as a Drummer and served with the Welsh Regiment, 1st/6th Battalion.

Two days before Christmas 1914, Charles died at Swansea Hospital, aged 13 years, which was recorded in the Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929
