No. 1 Wind Street, Swansea.  Charles Alexander Sander was the Tobacconist.

His son, Charles James was born 1888.

At the time of the 1891 Census, Charles aged 3, who was born in Cardiff, was living at 93 Ashley Vale, The United Parishes of St. James and St. Paul, Barton Regis.

Charles, 29, who was a Wholesale Drapers Assistant.  His wife, Gwenny, who was 25.  Gwenny maiden name was Baker, and they were married in 1883.  Their children were.

Gwenny Mary, 6; Agnes Dora, 4; Charles James, 3; William Francis, 1, and 1-month old Ada Barrie.

Also present was their servant, 22-year-old Margaret Emily Corne.

A decade later at the time of the 1901 Census, the Sander family had moved to 5 Gorse Terrace, Swansea.

1901 Census

Tobacconist Charles, 39, owned his own business and his wife, Gwenny, 37.  Their children were

Gwenny, 16; Charles James, 13; William F., 11; Ada Bessie, 10; Jane, 7; Bessie S., 3, and 2-year-old Clement A.

Employed by the family were sisters Mennie,18, and Jessie, C. Vicery, 15.

The family moved to 1 Wind Street, Swansea  by the time of the 1911 Census.

1911 Census

Charles, 49, was the business owner of the Tobacconist.  Gwenny, 47.  Their children present at the time of the census living at home were

Charles James, 23, who was an Assistant in the Business.  Mary Jane, 17; Bessie A., 13, and Clement Alan 12 years old.

Frances Stock, 22, was employed by the family as a servant.

Charles enlisted and served with the Somerset Light Infantry, 3rd Battalion.

Two months before his death, 12th of May 1916, at 39a Balaclava Street, Charles married Elsie Francis.  The marriage ceremony was at St. David’s church. 

Charles was buried at Danygraig Cemetery.  The funeral was conduct by his brother Father Benedict Sander.  The funeral was published in the South Wales Daily Post
