David George Thomas

 David George Thomas served with the Welsh Regiment, 21st Battalion, when he died on the 19th of February 1917. 

Born in 1892 in Swansea, David was the son of John Thomas and Sarah James, who were married in 1881.

The 1901 Census records that 9-year-old David was living at 29 Mysydd Street.

John, 45, ran his own fruitier business, whilst his wife, Sarah, 42, had her own fishmonger business.  Their children were

Lillian, 16, who was a Pupil Teacher; Irene, 11; David, 9; Muriel, 7; Elaine, 5, and 7-month-old Amelia.

A decade later, the 1911 Census records that 19-year-old David was living at 29 Plymouth Street.

John, 56, and 53-year-old Sarah ran their own fruit and fishmonger businesses.  Their children present were

Gertrude M., 23, and Irene Annie, 21, who were both shop assistants. David G., 19, was a fishmonger. Elaine M., 14, and 10-year-old Amelia

Short Service


David George’s short service record has survived. He enlisted at Cardiff on 9th February 1916.  May of that year, David, who was in France, suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis. David was declared unfit in August 1916.  He had served 1 month in France, July to August 1916.

January 1917, the doctor’s certificate was issued.  David died that February.  The Herald of Wales reported his funeral at Danygraig.
