Early Life

Born in 1912 at Swansea, Edwin John Mort was the son of Llewelyn Mort and Selina Annie Mort. His childhood was rooted in the industrial communities of Manselton, where tinplate manufacture shaped the rhythm of daily life.

By the 1921 Census, the Mort family were living at 91 Robert Street, Manselton, Swansea. Llewelyn, aged 37, worked as a Furnace Man at the tinplate works operated by Richard Thomas & Co., Tinplate Manufacturers, while his wife Selina Annie, aged 36, undertook household duties. Their children present were Ada Adelaide (13), David Llewelyn (10), and Edwin John (8)—all attending school—along with Margery Elaine (1), the youngest of the household.

Marriage

In 1936, Edwin married Mary Hannah Anthony, establishing his own home as the decade advanced toward war.

Military Service
