Early Life

Iorwerth Jenkins

Born in 1918 at Llangyfelach, Swansea, Iorwerth Jenkins was the son of David Jenkins and Mary Elizabeth Rees, growing up within the mining communities of Treboeth and the Llangyfelach parish.

By the 1921 Census, the Jenkins family were living at Warion Cottage, Laug Road, Treboeth. David, aged 36, worked as a Collier Hewer for Tirdonkin Merthyr Collieries, while his wife Mary Eliza, aged 32, undertook household duties. Their children present were William (13), Thomas Rees (11), Annie E. (9), and Bronwen (6)—all attending school—along with Iorwerth (2) and Trevor (10 months). Also in the household were William Jenkins (66), a boarder, and Thomas Jenkins (41), recorded as a visitor, reflecting the extended family and community ties typical of mining districts.

Military Service

Death and Burial

Iorwerth died at Brighton on 9 October 1943. His body was brought home to Swansea and he was laid to rest at Morriston Cemetery, where his grave stands among the wartime burials of the district.
