Sapper Sidney John Williams – Royal Engineers

Early Life

Sidney John Williams was born in 1913 at Swansea, the son of James Williams and Naomi Beddoe, who had married in 1906. He grew up in a busy Brynmelin Street household typical of early‑20th‑century Swansea, where small family businesses and close‑knit domestic life shaped the rhythm of everyday living.

1921 Census

At the time of the 1921 Census, the Williams family were residing at 16a Brynmelin Street, Swansea. James Williams, aged 42, was a General Dealer working on his own account, while his wife Naomi, aged 35, undertook the household duties. The children present were Florrie Beddoe (15), Naomi’s daughter from before her marriage, employed as a Messenger by Smith & Son; Cyril Williams (10); Sydney (8); Agnes (7); Glenrys (5); and Clifford (1).

Military Service

Sidney served as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers, a corps whose work underpinned the British Army’s operations through construction, bridging, demolition, and technical support. Even without detailed service records, his rank places him among the thousands of engineers whose skills were essential throughout the war and into the immediate post‑war period.
