George Richard Davies – Royal Naval Patrol Service

Ordinary Seaman George Richard Davies – Royal Naval Patrol Service

Early Life

George Richard Davies was born in 1924 in Swansea, the son of William Richard Davies and Flossie May Davies. Very few official records survive for George’s early years, and his civilian life before enlistment remains only lightly documented.

Military Service

George served as an Ordinary Seaman with the Royal Naval Patrol Service, the branch responsible for minesweeping, coastal defence, and small‑craft operations throughout the war and into the post‑war period. His final posting was to H.M.S. Europa, the RNPS headquarters at Lowestoft, which acted as the administrative and training centre for thousands of patrol service personnel.

Death and Burial

George died on 13 October 1947, during the difficult post‑war years when many RNPS men were still engaged in duties connected to demobilisation and coastal clearance. He was brought home to Swansea and buried at Morriston Cemetery, where his grave forms part of the earliest post‑war naval burials.
