The first Second World War burial at Morriston Cemetery

With the arrival of the 1940s, the Second World War was only a few months old when Morriston Cemetery received its first wartime burial of the new conflict: Private Ivor James Christopher Jones.

Early Life

Ivor James Christopher Jones was born in 1911, in Swansea, the only child of James John Jones and Alice Eunice Clara Coleman, who had married in 1904 in Swansea.

1921 Census

By the time of the 1921 Census, the Jones family were living at 20 Byng Street, Landore. James John, aged 42 and born in Carmarthenshire, was recorded as a General Labourer employed by the Heavy Steam Haulage Co., J. John, Morriston, though at the time of the census he was out of work, reflecting the difficult post‑war economic climate. His wife, Alice Eunice Clara, aged 39 and born in Gloucestershire, undertook the household duties. Their son Ivor, aged 10, was the only child in the home.

Marriage

In 1930, Ivor married Elizabeth Maud McHughes, establishing his own household as the decade moved toward the uncertainty of war.

Military Service

During the Second World War, Ivor James Christopher Jones served as a Private in the Welch Regiment, 6th Battalion, one of the local battalions that drew heavily from Swansea, Landore, and Morriston.

Death and Burial

The South Wales Daily Post reported his death on 29 January 1940. Private Jones had been returning home on leave when he became suddenly ill. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

He was buried at Morriston Cemetery, becoming the first Second World War burial recorded there.
