Early Life
Henry Johnston was born in 1916 in Pembrokeshire, the son of Francis John Johnston and Elizabeth Anne Gwyther, who married in 1903 at the Parish Church, Nash, Pembrokeshire. His early childhood unfolded in the Neyland area, where the Johnston family formed part of the close‑knit communities surrounding the docks and railway.

At the time of the 1921 Census, the family were living at 12 Cambrian Road, Neyland.
Henry’s father, Francis John Johnston, was absent from the household on census night. His mother, Elizabeth Ann, aged 38, undertook the household duties. The children present were Frederick George (9); Cissie (7); Henry James (4)—all attending school—and Charles (2).
Marriage
In 1943, Henry married Iris Gibbs, establishing his own household during the wartime years.
Military Service
Henry served as a Gunner with the Royal Artillery, attached to 102 (The Pembroke Yeomanry) Field Regiment. The Pembroke Yeomanry, with deep roots in West Wales, saw extensive service during the Second World War, and its artillerymen formed a vital part of Britain’s overseas campaigns.
