John William Roberts was born in 1914, in Morriston, the son of John Roberts and Florence Green, who had married in 1907 at All Saints Church, West Ham, Essex.

By the 1921 Census, the Roberts family were living at 62 Lan Street, Morriston. John Roberts, aged 37 and born in Middlesex, was recorded as an Army Pensioner, while his wife Florence, aged 33 and also born in Middlesex, managed the home. Their children were Gladys (11), Florence (8), John (7), and Helen (4). The household also included John’s mother, Martha Roberts (69), and Florence’s father, Dudley Green (66), creating a multi‑generational family typical of Morriston’s close-knit streets.

Military Service

During the Second World War, John William Roberts served as a Corporal in the Royal Armoured Corps, one of the key mechanised formations of Britain’s wartime army.

Death and Burial

John died on 26 September 1940, during the early phase of the war. He was buried at Morriston Cemetery, where his grave forms part of the growing record of Second World War burials in the district.
