Early Life and Family Background

Thomas James Glyndwr Thomas was born in 1918, at Loughor, the son of William Thomas and Nellie Maria Davies, who had married in 1914 at Swansea.

1921 Census

By the time of the 1921 Census, the Thomas family were living at Belgrave Road, Loughor. William, aged 31, worked as a Coal Cutter at the Baile Glass Colliery Company, while his wife Nellie Maria, aged 26, undertook the household duties. Their children were Laura Mary (6), Ethel Arabella (4), Glyndwr (2), and Vernal (1), forming a young family rooted in the mining community of Loughor.

Service in the Royal Air Force

During the Second World War, Thomas James Glyndwr Thomas served as a Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, based at RAF Kemble, Gloucestershire. He was trained as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, a demanding dual role requiring technical skill, rapid communication, and defensive capability during flight operations.

Halifax II

The Halifax II Crash – 14 January 1943

On 14 January 1943, Thomas was serving aboard a Halifax II during an air test from RAF Kemble. Shortly after take‑off, the aircraft stalled and crashed into Oaksey Wood, resulting in the loss of all on board. Thomas was among those who died in the accident, a tragedy that struck both the station and his home community.

His body was brought back to Wales, where he was laid to rest at Kingsbridge Cemetery, returning him to the district where he had been born and raised.

Family

Thomas was the husband of Doreen Thomas, of Gorseinon, who survived him and remained part of the community that remembered his service and sacrifice.
