During the Second World War, William served as a Private in the Welch Regiment, 4th Battalion, a unit whose men were drawn from communities across South Wales and engaged in home defence, training duties, and operational commitments as the conflict progressed.
William lost his life on 19 April 1944, at Tunbridge Wells, during the final year of the war. His body was brought home to Wales and laid to rest at Kingsbridge Cemetery, marking the last Second World War burial within the cemetery and closing its wartime roll with the youngest of its fallen.
