Buried on the upper slopes of Danygraig Cemetery, is Albert John Hastings.

Gunner Albert John Hastings, who served with the Royal Artillery, 122 Field Regiment, died on the 15th of May 1943, aged 26 years.

Albert born in 1917, was the son of Samuel Johnson and Sarah Jane Hastings.  Sarah was Samuel’s second wife following the death of his first wife.

At the time of the 1921 Census, the Hastings family was residing at 14 Campbell Street, Mount Pleasant

40-year-old Leicester-born Samuel was employed as a Railway Shunter, with the Swansea Harbour Trust. Sarah, 36 years undertook the household.

Two of the older children were Samuel’s from a previous marriage. Charles Arthur Thomas, 17, was employed as an Engine Cleaner with the L & N W Railway.  Annie Elizabeth, 16, assisted Sarah in undertaking the household duties.

The younger children were Beatrice Mary, 8; Ernest George, 7; and Lilian Rose, 6, all of whom attended school. Albert, 4, and 7-month-old Robert Henry.
