Royal Army Medical Corps

The Royal Army Medical Corps was formed in 1898, to provide medical services to all Army personnel and their families, in war and peace

Before the Second World War, RAMC recruits were required to be at least 5 feet 2 inches (1.57 m) tall and could enlist up to 30 years of age. They initially enlisted for seven years with the colours, and a further five years with the reserve, or three and nine years. They trained for six months at the RAMC Depot, Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Church Crookham, before proceeding to specialist trade training.  The Queen Elizabeth Barracks, which were originally known as Boyce Barracks after Major William Wallace Boyce, DSO, RAMC were built as a training depot for the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1938

In August 1943, Harold John Thomas, who served with the Royal Army Medical Corps died, aged 24 years

Harold, who was 2 at the time of the 1921 Census, was the son of William John Thomas and Catherine Nurse., who were married in 1898. The family resided at 18 Kilvey Terrace.

1921 Census

William, 43, was a Dock Labourer, employed by S.H.T. Officer Somerset Place.  Catherine, also 43, undertook the household duties.

Their children were 20-year-old, William Henry, who is a Sailor. Florence May, 15, who assisted with household duties; Winifred, 11, Frederick, 9, who both attend school and 2-year-old Harold.
