Raymond Mort

 

Corporal Raymond Mort, we served with the Monmouthshire Regiment, 3rd Battalion.  Died on the 11th of July 1941.

Born in 1917, Raymond was registered as Griffith Raymond, the son of Thomas L. Mort and Margaret A. Thomas. Who were married in 1914

Recorded on the 1921 Census, the Mort family resided at 9 George Terrace, Middle Road.

Thomas, 33, was a Tin Worker.  Margaret was 30 years old and was a shopkeeper.

Their young children were Elund, 6; Raymond, 3, and 1-year-old Elwyn.

In July 1939, Raymond married Elizabeth E. Mogridge.  Equally, he was recorded as Griffith.

Raymond, along with another five soldiers, sadly lost their lives in a training exercise at Carlingford Lough, Northern Ireland.  The group of soldiers was carrying out manoeuvres, and tactical exercises of the beach landing, and they had left a boat, which was 30 yards offshore when the five got into difficulties.  The local newspaper Lurgean Mail reported the tragedy

Following the deaths, an inquest was heard, and the verdict was returned from Dr. J. B. McBurney that deaths resulted from drowning.

reported the death of Raymond’s body came home, and he was buried at Danygraig Cemetery and also the funeral
