Some of the men are commemorated locally, and their links to the area have been associated with or by marriage.

This is the case of Arthur Trerise.

Second Engineer Officer Arthur Trerise, served with the Merchant Navy, on board the S.S. Trehata, which was sunk on the 8th of August 1942.  Arthur is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.

Arthur, born in 1918 in Cardiff, was the son of Arthur Trerise and Mary Ann Lawe Young.  They were married at St. Margaret, Roath, Cardiff in 1917.

The 1921 Census records the Trerise family living at 38 Sapphire Street, Cardiff.

Arthur, 27, was a Fitting Heating Apparatus in Public Housing employed by Hamptons Heating Co., Mary, was 22 years old.  Their son, Arthur, was 2 years old.

Arthur married in 1938 Ruby M. Williams at Cardiff.

Ruby had the connections with St. Thomas.

The 1939 Register records that Ruby resides at 25 Monthermer Road, Cardiff, with James her son.

8th of August 1942, the S.S. Trehata part of a Convey SC-94, was on the route from Hampton Road, US – Sydney, Nova Scotia – Manchester, with a cargo of 3000 tons of steel, 1000 tons of manufactured goods, and 3000 tons of foodstuffs, including lard and cheese.

At 15.18 hours on the 8th, U-176 fired two spreads each of two torpedoes at convoy SC-94, a total of 36 ships, southeast of Cape Farewell, ships that were hit were S.S. Trehata, S.S. Kelso, and S.S. Mount Kassion who hit were after 1 minute 20 seconds and one hit each after 1 minute 34 seconds and 2 minutes 11 seconds, then sinking noises were heard.

The S.S. Trehata (Master John Lawrie, DSC with Bar, DSO) was the ship of convoy commodore Vice-Admiral D.F. Moir, DSO, RN. The master, the commodore, six naval staff members 19 crew members, and four gunners were lost. 21 crew members and four gunners were picked up by the Norwegian steam merchant S.S. Inger Lise and landed at Preston.

At the time of Arthur's death, the Merchant Seaman Death Records, records that Ruby is living at 4 Hawkhill Avenue, Edinburgh
