 Henry James Rees

Henry was born in 1875, in Llansamlet, and was the son of Edward Rees and Elizabeth John who were married in 1858, Llansamlet.

Henry aged 6 at the time of the 1881 Census was living at 25 Mackworth Street, Llansamlet.

1881 Census

Edward, 41, was a Green Grocer & Scavenger Contractor.  Elizabeth was 40 years.  Their children were

Margaret, 17; Thomas F., 15; Henry J., 6 and 2 year old Pricilla

Employed was a servant Margaret Bullenham, aged 15.

The family were still living at 25 Mackworth Street by the time of the 1891 Census.

1891 Census

Edward, 51, still and Greengrocer. Elizabeth, 50.  Their children present at the property are

Margaret Merryman, 29, who is a widow is assisting at Home; Thomas, 25, Greengrocer; Henry J., 16, Apprentice to Fitter, and 12-year-old Pricilla.

Also, present Margaret Bullenham, now 25 years.

In 1895, Henry married Ada Priscilla Jones.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the couple were living at 32 Bonymaen Road.

1901 Census

Henry, 26, is a Engine Fitter Copperworks, and Ada P., 28 years.  Their children are

Edward J., 4, In School and Ada, 3.

Henry and Ada have moved to Taiyrysgol, Bethel Road, Llansamlet, at the time of the 1911 Census.

1911 Census

Henry, 36, a Mechanical Engineer In Chemical Works Foreman; Ada Priscilla, 36.  Their children are

Edward John, 14; Leslie Charles, 13; Terence Henry, 9; Thomas James, 7; Francis David, 6 and sim month old Henry James.

By the 1921 Census, Henry and Ada had moved back to 10 Mackworth Terrace, St. Thomas.

1921 Census

Henry, 46, was a Foreman Engineer, National Oil Refineries, employed by National Oil Refineries, Skewen and Ada Priscilla, 48.  Their children are

Thomas James, 17, Crane Fireman, employed by National Oil Refineries, Skewen; Francis David, 14, Chemical Plumber’s Assistant, employed by National Oil Refineries, Skewen; Henry James, 10; Eustace Edgar, 9 and 6-year-old Ada Elizabeth, who all attend school.

By the time of the 1939 Register, Henry and Ada had moved to 17 Margaret Street, with their son, Henry J.  Henry’s occupation is recorded as Chemical Engineer – Oil Refinery.

Henry is buried at St. Samlet churchyard.
