Ernest William Winter,

Not all the sailors buried at Danygraig Cemetery from the Second World War died on a vessel/boat.

Ernest William Winter, who was ranked Stoker 2nd Class, served at H.M.S. Cabot—and died on the 1st of October 1942.  Aged 24.

Ernest was born in 1918, the son of George and Charlotte Winter.

At the time of the 1921 Census, the Winter family was residing at 15 Pant Street

George William Winter, 25 years old, came from Yorkshire and was a Screen Room Man employed by Phoenix Fuel Manufacturers.  His wife, Charlotte who was recorded as Lottie, was also 25 years old.  She too came from Yorkshire.

Their three sons, who were all born in Swansea were Ernest William, 3; George Herbert, 2, and 1-year-old Albert Harry.

The family had moved to 25 Llanerch Road by 1939, and this is where they are recorded as living at the time of the 1939 Register.

George W., worked at the Docks, whilst Lottie, carried out the household duties.

The three sons, Ernest, who was employed as a Steel Furnaceman, George H., employed as a Public Works Contractor and Wilfred E., a Press Stamp Operator.

1942, Ernest married Winifred Marjorie Tayton.

Ernest died later that year at H.M.S. Cabot

H.M.S. Cabot was a Royal Naval Training Establishment, Ashley Down, Bristol, formed on 2nd May 1940 at Muller’s Orphanage as an overflow establishment for H.M.S Drake at Devonport barracks and base, and on 13th July 1940 was commissioned as H.M.S Cabot. On 15th September 1942, the three Orphan Houses it had occupied were vacated and handed over to the War Office, the training having been transferred to Risley and Thorpe Arch, near Wetherby.
