William Richard Hiles who was born in 1902, during that year, parents Herbert Harry Hiles and Edith Maud Robins, were married.
At the time of the 1911 Census, the family were living at 11
Balaclava Street.

Hebert, 28, was a Coal Trimmer, also 28 years old is
Edith. Their two children at this time
were
William, 7, and 2-year-old Walter.
William at the time of 1921 Census, was 18 years old, and
was recorded as Press Man Fuel Worker, employed by East Dock, was still at
home, 11 Balaclava Street.

Henry, 39, was still recorded as a Coal Trimmer. Edith is 38
years old. The youngest son was 6-year-old Herbert Harry, who was at school.
Sadly, Walter had died in 1912.
January 1924, William married Harriet Hardee
By the time of the 1939 Register, the couple were living at
49 Balaclava Street.

William’s occupation was Export Coal Trimmer, which was
Heavy Work. Harriet undertook the House Duties.
William enlisted and joined the Royal Artillery. Following the Fall of Singapore, William was reported missing, at the time of his capture, William had been in service for 10 months.

William was captured and was a Prisoner of War. The South Wales Daily Post reported William’s capture, in April 1942.
