George Harris

 Trooper George Harris, who served with the Royal Armoured Corps, 16th/5th Lancers died on 7th August 1940.

The information provided on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission is very limited.

So, with some research from various sources there is further information.

George was born 1910, Goodwick, Pembrokeshire is the son of George and Kate Harris.

 At the time of the 1911 Census, George who is 5 months old, is the youngest child living at 32 Llarbour Village, Goodwick.

George, 35, Steward (ship). Kate who is 31 years.  The children are Gwennie, 6; Jinnie, 5, and George.

A decade later at the time of the 1921 Census the family have moved to Swansea and are residing at 11 Mysydd Road, Landore.

George, 41 is employed as Fitter’s helper at British Mannesmann Tube Co., Landore.  Catherine is 41 years.

The children are Guennse, 16 is employed as a shop assistant, at Woolworth & Co., Swansea; Jennie, 15; George, 11 and Willie, 8 who both are at school.  The youngest child is Florence, 2 years old.

Also present is Jennie Morgan, 19, visitor, who is Mother’s helped.

George enlisted an enlisted with the Royal Tank Corps, in 1931, and transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps at the outbreak of the Second World War

George married Constance Hall in 1937.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, and with the 1939 Register being undertaken, George, who has returned home on leave to 168 Port Tennant Road.  George’s occupation is recorded as 102nd O.C.T. Unit H.Q. Company, Alma Barracks, Blackdown.

Herald of Wales 
Died at a Military Hospital, England, 7th August.  George was buried at Danygraig Cemetery, with a military funeral.  The Herald of Wales reports the funeral.
