 The Brookwood 1914-18 Memorial, Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey originally commemorated Charles James Godfrey, Able Seaman, who died on the 5th of April 1919.

Charles was the son of Charles Edward Godfrey and Elizabeth Jane Hicks, born in 1898.

The only two official records are the 1901 Census.

Charles, aged 2 years, lived with his grandparents at 12 Clifton Hill.

James Hicks, 51, was employed as a Dock Labourer and Mary Jane was 53 years.  Their two daughters were

Elizabeth Ann, 23, who is employed as a Woolen Weaver, and Susan, 14, who is a Spinney Woolen Weaver

Charles enlisted with the Royal Naval Division on the last day of 1914 and was discharged in November 1918, having been wounded in the head.

The second official record is the 1918 Electrical Register, and Charles’s address is recorded as 28 Orchard Street.

It was here that Charles, in April 1919, had died.  Following an inquest, the verdict was that Charles had died from meningitis as a result of a wound.

Charles was buried at Danygraig Cemetery, but it wouldn’t be until the 2010s that his grave had an official CWGC headstone.
