John Dermody who was born in 1879, son of Daniel Dermody and
Mary A. Sullivan.
At the time of the 1881 Census, Mary A. Dermody, was living
with her mother, Catherine Sullivan’s home, 17 Mill Street.

Catherine Sullivan, 54, who was a widow. She didn’t have an occupation recorded,
however, the census records state that she was a H. Keeper At Home. Her two younger children were
Catherine, 17, and 14-year-old David who was employed as a
General Labourer.
Catherine’s eldest daughter was 23-year-old Mary A. Dermody,
who were living at the address with her two children, 3-year-old John and 1
year old Margaret.
13-year-old John at the time of the 1891 Census, the eldest
child, was living with his parents at 13 New Street. The census records their surname as Dermondy.

Daniel, 34, is employed as a fireman in a colliery. Mary is 33 years old. Their children are
John, 13, who is employed as Tin Pulling Up Door; Maggie, 11;
Daniel, 9; James, 6; Julia, 3 who all attended school. The youngest daughter was Mary A. 9 months
old.
Also present at the house were Mary’s mother, 60-year-old
Catherine Sullivan and 24-year-old sister, Catherine Sullivan.
In 1900, John, married Elizabeth Driscoll.
The following year, at the time of the 1901 Census, John and
Elizabeth were living with her mother, Ann Driscoll’s home, 156 Llangyfelach
Street.

156 Llangyfelach Street was a sweet shop, which was kept by Ann
Driscoll, 54, who was widowed. Also present
at the property, was her daughter.
22-year-old Elizabeth Dermody and 23-year-old John, who was
employed as a Stoker at the colliery. They
had a 2-year-old daughter Patricia.
At the time of the 1911 Census, John and Elizabeth were living
at 14 Lamb Street.

John, 33 was employed as a Marine Engineer, and Elizabeth, 31. Their children were
Patricia, 12; Donald James, 9, and 3-year-old John.
John served with the Mercantile Marine Reserve. At the time of his death, 1918, was ranked as
Engineer onboard H.M. Trawler “Peggy Nutten”.

John lost his life following an operation at the Sir Patricks (Dunns) Hospital, Dublin. The South Wales Daily Post reported his death
