Thomas Sheehan

H.M.S. Carnarvon
 H.M.S. Carnarvon, a British armoured cruiser.  At the outbreak of the First World War, was assigned to the Cape Verde Station to search for German commerce raiders while protecting British shipping. Carnarvon was transferred to the South Atlantic two months later and assigned to the squadron that destroyed the German East Asia Squadron at the Battle of the Falklands. She was assigned to the North America and West Indies Station in 1915 and continued to patrol against German raiders and escort convoys to the end of the war.

One of the stokes who served onboard was Thomas Sheehan.

Thomas who was born in 1893 was the eldest son of James Sheehan and Ellen Dineen, who were married in 1891.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the Sheehan family were resident at 19 Well Street.

James, 31, was a Sailor.  Ellen was 32 years old.  Their children were

Thomas, 8; Mary, 6; Daniel, 4, and 1-year old Timothy.

Also present was 29-year-old Catherine Dineen, sister of Ellen.

The Sheehan were still resident at 19 Well Street at the time of the 1911 Census.

James, 42, who was a Stoker. Ellen was 42 years old; she was a House Keeper.  Their children were

Thomas, 18, who was employed as a Tin-worker; Mary, 16, who Assisted in Housework; Daniel, 13; Timothy, 10; John, 9, who all attended school.  The younger children were twins, 3 years old Kate and Johanna.

Thomas married in 1913 Margaret E. Connor.

Thomas served during the First World War with the Royal Navy, died on the 25th of April 1918.
