On the 30th of July 1918, S.S. Bayronto was
damaged by a torpedo fired from UB-88, southeast of the Isle of
Wight. Bayronto was en route from
Havre, France, to Barry in ballast. Bayronto
survived this attack, however, two seamen were to lose their lives.
Greaser 18-year-old Muhammad Farah, who is commemorated on
the Bombay 1914-1918 Memorial, Mumbai.
His home address was given as 219 Bute Street, Cardiff.

April 2025, the Commonwealth War Grave Commission unveiled a
new special memorial, installed at St. Samlet church, commemorating to Robert’s
memory. The headstone isn’t placed at
his grave, but its inscription reads “Buried Elsewhere In This Churchyard”
Robert Pendrill Thomas was born in 1888, the youngest son of
Robert Thomas and Hannah Davies.
The 1891 Census records that Robert is aged 3 years, and the
Thomas family are residing at 205 Plaasycoed, Llangyfelach.

Robert, 43, is employed as a Steel Worker. Hannah is 42 years old. their children are
Margaret, 18, who is a Stocking Maker; Alice Jane, 15; Mary,
12; Hannah, 9; Joseph. D., 7; Charlotte, 4, and 3-year-old Richard P.
The 1901 Census, the family have moved to 10 Railway
Terrace, Cilybebyll.

Robert, 52, is employed as a Rollerman at the Steel Works. Hannah is 57 years old. Their children are
Hannah, 19, who is a Dressmaker; Joseph D., 17, who is employed
as at the Steelworks; Charlotte, 14, and 13-year-old Robert P.
Robert at the time of the 1911 census is recorded as
Pnedrill Thomas. He is living at his
brother in law’s home, Plasycoed Roath Lake E.

David Evans, 37, who is a University Professor of Mine. Mary Evans is 32 years old. Their children are
Robert Arthur, 10; Morgan David Arwyn, 5, and 3-year-old Ernest
Hywel.
Mary’s siblings, Lottie (Charlotte), 24, who is a Music
Student, and Pendrill, 23, who is employed as a Fitter also reside at the
property.
Employed by the family is 26-year-old servant Alice Hughes.
