Thomas was born in 1870, the youngest son of John Baker and
Catherine Kelly, who were born in Waterford.
At the time of the 1871 Census, the Baker family was boarders
residing at 27 William Street, the home of Elizabeth Thomas

John, who was a Bookbinder, was 23 years old, and Catherine
was 20 years old. The census records
that she “Didn’t have an occupation”.
Their two sons are
George,4, and 2-month-old Michael.
A decade later, the Baker family was living at 24 Clarence
Street at the time of the 1881 Census.
The family had grown during the last decade.

32-year-old John, who is still employed as a Bookbinder, and
his wife, 42-year-old Catherine. Their children
are
George, 12; Michael, 10; John, 8; Kate, 6, who all attended
school, and the younger daughter is 7 months old, Rosa.
The 1891 census records that the Baker family had moved to
33 Mysydd Street.

42-year-old John, who is still employed as a Bookbinder, and
his wife, 46-year-old Catherine. Their children
are
22-year-old George, who is employed as a Labourer at the
Docks; Michael, 20, who is also a bookbinder; John, 18, who is a Plumber; Kate,
16, who is a student. Alfred, 13; Rosa, 10; and 5-year-old Sidney, who all attended
school.
It should be noted that Thomas is recorded as Michael.
The next census, which records Thomas, is the 1911 census. Thomas,
who is now married to Mary Ann Thomas, in 1897 at St. David's church,
Carmarthen. They lived at Mary’s parents'
home, 58 Lammas Street, Carmarthen.

Thomas served with the Royal Engineers, Welsh Division
during the First World War, dying on 31 August 1919, in Carmarthen.
