Not all the men who served during the First World War and are buried at Danygraig Cemetery had a military headstone erected.  This was the case with Matthew Ernest Hare.

Matthew was born in 1886, the son of Arthur John Hare and Rachel Williams.

The Hare family at the time of the 1891 census were residing at 10 Kilvey Terrace.

1891 Census

Arthur, 41, was employed as a ship's carpenter. Rachel was 40 years old.  Their children present at the house were

Arthur John, 19, who was an Apprentice Plumber; Thomas Henry, 18, who was employed as a Letter Carrier Messenger; William Charles, 16, who was also an Apprentice Plumber; Albert David, 11; Sarah Ethel, 9; Fanny Louisa, 7; Matthew Ernest, 5; Sidney Francis, 3, who all attended school.  The youngest child was Edwin Stephenson, aged 3 months.

The family at the time of the 1901 census had moved to No.4 Kilvey Terrace.

51-year-old Arthur is employed as a Shipwright.  Rachel is also 51 years old.  Their children present are

28-year-old Arthur John, who is employed as a Plumber Coppersmith; Thomas Henry, 27, who is employed as a postman; Albert David, 21, who is employed as a clerk in an office; Sarah E., 19; Fanny L., 17; Matthew E., 15, who is employed as a Messenger with the G.W.R.; Sidney F., 13, who is a Office Boy Commercial.  The two younger children are Edwin S., 10, and 8-year-old Ivor James.

The 1911 Census records that Matthew is the oldest son who is living with his parents, who are still residing at No.4

Arthur John, 60, is still employed as a Shipwright, and he is widowed. Rachel had died in 1908.  The remaining children present are

Fanny Louisa, 27; Matthew Ernest, 25, who is employed as a Plumber; Edwin Stevenson, 20, who is a Shop Assistant; Ivor James, 18, who is an Apprentice Fitter.

August 1911, Matthew married Nellie Rebecca Ayres, at St. Marys church.

South Wales Daily Post
Matthew served with the Army Service Corps and died on the 22nd of January 1918 at Bulford Camp, Salisbury.  The South Wales Daily Post published the death notice.
