At the time of his death, John Frederick Beckett was living at 34 Miers Street.  Deck Hand John served on board H.M. Trawler Soar with the Royal Naval Reserve.

John was born in Lowestoft in 1882, a son of William Beckett and Mary Ann Challis, who were married in 1848.

In the 1891 Census, the Beckett family was living at 23 Clemence Street, Lowestoft.

William Beckett, 46, was a Coal Porter, and Marjorie was 41 years old.  Their children were

Elizabeth, 20; Marjorie, 19; Eliza, 16; Agnes, 12; George W., 10; John F., 8; James R., 7; Alice M., 5; William G., 2, and 1-month-old Albert E.

John isn’t recorded in any further censuses.

John was at Cardiff when he joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 2nd November 1916. During the war, he served with the Longset and Shikari II.

In May 1918, John was sent to prison when he was found guilty of being absent without leave.

John was on demobilization leave when he was accidentally struck by a wire rope that injured his right leg and thigh. He died at Swansea Hospital from shock.  The South Wales Daily Post reported his accident and his death.  John was buried at Danygraig Cemetery.
