The South Wales Daily Post reported in May 1918 that Mrs Murphy, of 38 Brynmelyn Street, had received the welcome news that her son, Daniel, a prisoner of war, was slightly wounded in Germany.  The article also states that Mrs Murphy’s other son, Thomas George, and Sidney Joseph were serving with the Royal Navy.

Sidney died on the 30th of November 1919, his was the last military burial at Danygraig Cemetery.

Sidney who was born in 1892, was the son of Daniel Murphy and Catherine Hughes who were married in 1883.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the Murphy family was living at 30 Brynmelyn Street.

Daniel, 44, was employed as a General Labourer and Catherine was 37 years old.  Their children were

Thomas, 17, who was a General Labourer; Daniel, 15; Dennis, 10; Sydney, 8; Ellen, 7, and 3-year-old Alfred

Also present at the property at this time was General Labourer Patrick Murphy, 46, who was Daniel’s brother.

The family moved to no.38, by the time of the 1911 Census.

55-year-old Daniel was a Labourer and Catherine who was 48 years old.  Their children who were living at the property were

Thomas, 27; Daniel, 25; Dennis, 21; Sidney Joseph, 19; who were employed as a Labourers; Ellen, 17; Alfred, 13; Annie, 10; and 7-year-old Mary, who all attended school. 

Also present at the property at this time was General Labourer Patrick Murphy, 57, who was Daniel’s brother

Daniel was sent to prison in April 1916, for 2 months hard labour, after he was found guilty of Breach of Defence of Realm Act (withholding information).  The case was published in the Western Mail.

July 1915, Sidney enlisted for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.  October 1915 joined Hood Battalion. December 1915 until November 1916 suffered from Pyrexia, rejoined Hood Battalion. November 1916 until February 1917 gunshot wound to left leg slight, invalided to UK February 1917; Draft for BEF July 1917, joined Hood Battalion.  September 1917 until December 1917 Shellshock, rejoined Hood Battalion. February 1918 until March 1918 Gassed, invalided to UK March 1918; Draft for BEF October 1918, joined Hood Battalion. October 1918 until February 1919 to UK Demob. February 1919

Sidney died following demob, November 1919.
