William Ernest Bartlett

 

William Ernest Bartlett and Elsie Smith
5th April of 1918, driver William Ernest Bartlett, who drowned, and his body was discovered at Langland Bay.

William was born in 1896 and was the youngest son of William Henry Bartlett and Annie Ridge.

William died in 1901 before the 1901 Census was undertaken.

46-year-old Annie was living 144 Rhyddings Park Road.  Annie who had her own Laundress business.  Her children present were

Ada, 15; Barte, 12; Robert, 9; John, 6, and 5-year-old William.

56-year-old Annie, at the time of the 1911 Census, was still a Laundress, and the family were still living at 144 Rhyddings Park Road.

Also present at the property, were her three sons. 

Robert Henry, 19; John Herbert, 16, who were both Drivers, and William Ernest, 15, who was an Assistant in the business.

At the time of the First World War, William, who served with the Royal Field Artillery, 15th Reserve Battery, after enlisting during September 1914.  William saw action at Salonika, where he suffered from a fever and receiving treatment in Malta.  William was discharged the following September.
