Edgar Prothero

 There is a connection with Oystermouth and Danygraig.

Aged 2 months at the time of the 1891 Census, Edgar Prothero, was the youngest child of William Prothero and Ann Bailey, who were married in 1873.

At the time of the census, the family lived at 103 Lime Kiln Road, Oystermouth.

1891 Census

William, 37, was employed as a General Labourer, and Alice was 35.  Their children were

Mary A., 16; Florence E., 8; Edith, 5; Sidney, 2; and 2-month-old Edgar.

Swansea Prison Records

In 1898, William was sent to prison for 14 days after being found guilty of the Beach of Education Act. 

The family had moved to 9 Maddock Place by the time of the 1901 Census.

1901 Census

46-year-old William was employed as a Carter, and Alice was 45.  Their children were

Thomas, 21, employed as a General Labourer; Ada, 14; Sidney, 12; and Edgar, 9.

In 1910, Edgar married Helena Florence Hill.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Edgar and Nellie were living at 103 Rodney Street.

Edgar, 21, was a Haulier’s Driver, and Nellie was 20.  They had an 8-month-old son, William G.

Edgar enlisted with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and when he died on the 16th of October 1919, Edgar, who was ranked as an Able Seaman, was at H.M.S. Pembroke I, a shore establishment. Edgar was buried at Danygraig Cemetery.
